How to commission a piece

 We begin by talking about what you have in mind, where the piece will live, how it needs to function and what you’re drawn to. You don’t need to arrive with a finished design. Part of the process is working through those decisions together. 

Dan will design your piece based on information gathered during the consult and provide drawings for your review and approval.

 Once the design is settled, Dan selects the timber for the piece. This isn’t simply about choosing a species. Individual boards are considered for their grain, colour and character, including how they will sit alongside one another in the finished piece.  

 This is where the design becomes something tangible. Dan crafts each piece with close attention to the details most people may never notice, from the accuracy of the joinery to the way components meet and the grain flows across the piece. Traditional joinery techniques, including mortise and tenon and hand-cut dovetails where appropriate, are part of the craft DJC uses to demonstrate why these pieces are different from mass-produced furniture.  

Once every detail has been checked and the piece meets Dan’s standards, it’s ready for its new home. Your furniture is carefully prepared for transport, delivered and positioned in your space with the same care that went into making it. This is the final part of the commission process: seeing a piece that began as an idea finally sitting exactly where it was designed to belong.
